5. RULES FOR SPECIAL RETRIEVING TEST.

5. RULES FOR SPECIAL RETRIEVING TEST.

5.1 Purpose.
The purpose with the retrieving test is to determine the participating dogs elementary abilities to retrieveand their suitability to trace wounded or dead game.

5.2 Organization.
Retrieving tests according to these rules and regulations are organized by gun dog clubs connected to SKKand by the sub-divisions of Svenska Jägarförbundet. The results from test are announced by the organizers to appropriate club/sub-division. Judges with the right to judge Special retrieving tests are appointed by each club/sub-division.

5.3 Right to enter.
All dogs irrespective of breed or combinations of breeds older than 8 month has the right to enter the test. Bitches in heat are not allowed to participate. The arranging club has the right to limit the number of participants.

5.4 Class.
Only one class exists. Quality judgement is applied.

5.5 Extension of test.
The test includes a search section and a water section (not compulsory). The water section is excluded ifthere is no access to ice free water available. In the protocol it will be stated if the water section of the test has not been completed.

5.6 Subject for test.
The dog should be tested in the following moments: Search, the desire to retrieve, the grip on the retrievedobject, reactions to shot, willingness to co-operate and if, tested work, in water.

5.7 Type of game.
Appropriate game for the test is crows, gulls, pigeons and wild rabbits. Other kinds of small game canalso be used.

5.8 Test implementation.

5.8.1 Search section.
The test should take place in relative open terrain with good view. The area for the search should beapproximately 50 x 50 meters. The retrieving objects will be arranged in the search area partly through shot and throw by officials to mark brought down game and partly by placing of game in the terrain. Three (3) shots should be fired and four (4) pieces of game should be used. At the arrangement of the retrieving game should the dog, on lead, be given the opportunity to see the throw of two (2) pieces of game. With the throw will two shots be fired. Two (2) pieces of game should be discretely place on the ground, out of sight of the dog. In connection with this a third shot will be fired. The gun should be at least 15 meters from handler and dog. The retrieve should not commence until all four (4) pieces of game are arranged. During the search the handler is allowed to move within the search area along an imagined central line - this can be marked by strips - and through encouragement help and support the dog.

Area of judging should be:- The dogs ability to search the given area and localize existing game.

Requirements for approved test should be:- The dog should satisfactory search the given area and during the search retrieve at least three (3) pieces of game.

5.8.2 Water section.
The dog should from the bank of a pond, lake, river or equivalent watch the shot and throw of gull orduck into open water. The throw should take place from the bank and the distance to swim should not be less than fifteen (15) meters. The gun should be positioned slightly in from and to the side of the dog. During shot and throw the dog should be on lead.

Areas of judging should be:- The willingness of the dog to enter the water.- The dog's ability to swim. - The dog's ability to localize the game.

Requirements for approved test should be:- The dog should voluntarily enter the water.- The dog should be able to swim. - The dog should be able to localize existing game.

5.8.3 Retrieve.
The judging will take place during the search section and if applicable the water section.

Areas of judgement should be:- The willingness to retrieve game.- The suitability of the grip. - The willingness of a fast delivery of the game to the handler.

Requirements for approved test should be:- The dog should during the search section retrieve and deliver the game to or immediately close to the handler. - The dog should during the water section retrieve and deliver the game to or immediately close to the handler on the bank. - The dog should not chew on the game.

5.8.4 Reaction at the shot.
The judging will take place during the search section and if applicable the water section.

Areas of judging should be:- The reaction of the dog to the shot.

Requirements for approved test should be:- The dog should not show an evident fright or an over excitement at the shot. Nor should it show behaviour that would be difficult to control and would interfere in a shooting situation or reduce the ability of the dog to fulfil its task.

5.8.5 Co-operation.
Requirements for approved test should be:- The dog should during all test section show good control and if necessary the handler should be able to call the dog.

5.8.6 Instruction to the handler.
During all test sections the handler is allowed to encourage and support the dog. It is however notallowed to throw objects to guide the dog. It is forbidden to beat the dog.

5.8.7 Prices.
The judge should verbally announce his opinion on the work of the dog in accordance with the test rulesand deliver a completed test protocol to the handler. At the test the award will be either Approved or Not approved. To receive the award Approved it is necessary to have passed the test in all test sections - see also section 5.5 Extension of the test. If the test is not including the water section this should be stated in the protocol. Dog who has concluded an approved retrieving test will be awarded with a retrieving plaque from Svenska Jägarförbundet.
